Runner Safety tip #3-Summer running

Hi!!!!! It is starting to heat up here in Portland! The last 2 days have been in the 90s and we still show sun for a few more days (its a miracle!!!!)! With that it brings me to summer running. Each season presents its own pros and cons for running……except fall when its pretty much perfect all the time hahahaha, I am a little biased though as it is my favorite season.

Pros to summer running:

You don’t have to wear 15 layers that you want to start peeling off 10 minutes after you start.

Water fountains are actually turned on when you stop for a drink

Vitamin D

Natural tan

Cons:

You cannot take enough close off to cool yourself down

Feel like you sweat 15X more

Sunburns!

That is just a few for fun there are a million more, comment your favorite and least favorite things about summer running!

So, for the safety stuff.

Sunscreen is a must! I know we all want that beautiful golden tan, ok not everyone I know I don’t mind alabaster skin if it means no skin cancer. But when you are outside as much as we runners, hikers, swimmers, bikers and everything else are you need to take care of your skin. There are 3 major skin cancer types from sun exposure and the chances of getting them increase with sunburn so take care of yourself.

Hydration is key. When it is hotter we sweat a lot more. We lose water and lots of salt. If you don’t want to carry a water bottle plan your run near places that have water fountains or place you know you can run into and get water. Also remember if you are going to be out there for more than an hour you need more than just water, you need to replenish your electrolytes, mainly sodium and chloride. Take a gel or chew with you or mix a sports drink into your water bottle. For an hour or less I like 1/4 Gatorade to 3/4 water. The longer I am out the higher the Gatorade concentration gets and the more I bring gels. When hiking I love Cliff Blocks, tropical punch is my favorite flavor. Don’t let your salts get out of balance or you can literally drown yourself from the inside out.

Snakes!!!!!! I think this is dependent on where you are but snakes like to come out on roads and trails to sun themselves so be on the lookout and know what kind of snakes are in your area, especially the poisonous ones.

Allergies/allergic reactions if you have allergies keep a Benadryl or some other allergy medicine in your pocket (just 1-2 doses in a plastic bag) for emergencies. Also if you are allergic to bees or things like that plan accordingly when running, whether that means carting along an epi-pen or whatever. Just be prepared.

Heat stroke, this is a big one. If your core temperature gets above 104 degrees F or 40 degrees C. This requires immediate emergency treatment, not getting treated can cause brain, kidney, heart and muscles damage that may be irreversible and can even cause death. If you get too hot pour water over your head and sit in the shade. It is better to cut your run short or take a break in the middle than never be able to run again.

With all that, be safe and have fun out there!!!!!!

How is your Monday going so far??

(Image from google)

I am about to run out the door to Bio class then head home and let the dog out and pack everything for work tonight, then back to school for chemistry class then rush to my car to try and get to the train as early as possible to get to work on time! Woohoo!

It is week 2 of classes and so far so good. It is my 2nd week of school and working full time and I am easing into the schedule.

My goal for working out is to actually work out 3 times , in any form.

I have been looking at the weather and it looks like Tuesday morning it might not be raining and it doesn’t look like it will be freezing! If this holds true the pup and I will be out running!!!

Saturday looks like the afternoon might even have a little sun, we are running again!!

Every other day has rain, but if I can get the pup out 2 days this week for a run I will feel a little better about getting myself to the gym one day without her. Maybe Thursday after lab. Because I am gone so much now with work and school I feel bad leaving her to go to the gym. Which also means if this keeps up I might cancel my gym membership, no point in paying if I end up not going. I’ll keep you posed on that idea.

My sleep schedule is going good, it still needs refinement but I managed to keep most days pretty consistent……mostly.

Week catch-up

Monday I had 4 miles on my schedule but my IT band was still so tight even after rolling it twice so I got 1 miles done then switched to the elliptical machine for the last 3. More foam rolling needs to happen.

My roommates dog joined me for a little studying and I got 2 letters written and in the mailbox to friends.

I have used this torture device about 4 times so far this past week. It is definitely helping but I haven’t completely released the muscle. A few more rolls and I should be good.

Got my organics2you box!!! There was so much stuff in it!

These blood oranges have been awesome because of course I got sick!!! Ugh. Th3 cold finally got me.

This onion is huge!!! It’s the size of like 3 normal ones!!

Red cabbage, really nice and crisp

Dill

Celery root

Watercress

Bananas

Lettuce

Fuji apples

Carrots

Green onions

Beautiful yukon gold potatoes

Then I kept finding more and more potatoes at the bottom of the box.

So far I have made veggie pasta (it is a recipe from alicia Silverstone’s cookbook called rustic pasta) and veggie stir-fry with yakisoba noodles.

Tonight I’m making veggie fried rice.

How was your week?

Monday Motivation**March 6th, 2017

Can you suffer from the pain of both? I ate way too much junk this weekend and was bloated for at least half the weekend and tonight I ran 5 miles then walked for another 30.

Tomorrow I need to do some serious stretching and foam rolling (aka tourture). My right hip (IT band) is SUPER tight so my hip is hurting and it radiates down my thigh to my knee. So foam rolling is a big to do for me tomorrow……or today since its after midnight.

The boyfriend and I were seriously lazy this weekend, we watched at least 8 movies and some Game of Thrones episodes. But it was seriously needed for me since I was traveling the last 2 weekends.

Some random stuff from this week:

My walk to class from the back parking lot

Gotta love Oregon lol

The boyfriend suggested running a marathon together in October, he was thinking Portland marathon until I looked it up and the cost is $130!! Too rich for our current blood so I’m looking at other options. But i did look up some training plans on Google

Then i scrapped them and made my own hahaha.

Tonight was the premier of a new TV show

I used the 2 hour premier to distract me while I ran.

Yep, i run like a turtle.

Thank goodness for TVs on your treadmill.

When I got home I had some leftover sushi from yesterday’s dinner

It was good.

And now it’s pass out time.

Goodnight!!!!

Do you like sushi?

Way after the fact February Ipsy

February Ipsy bag,

Nail polish!

A kick ass brush (this alone would cost more than the entire bag I’m sure)

Toner

Highlighter, as the weather heats up this will come in handy

Bronzer,

Same here, summer is on it’s way in!!

Now lets look at some of the delicious food I’ve been eating

Breakfast sandwich

Chickenless chicken noodle soup lol and grilled cheese on 12 grain bread

Gordon’s beer battered fish fillets and curly fries

Onion bagel toasted with cream cheese and pickles and cheese

This awesome chinese salad

I love food.

Went to the gym 3 times so far this week.  2 strength training and one cardio.

How is your week going?

From Long Beach to Long Beach!

Last weekend I was in Long beach, CA for my grandmas birthday and this weekend thr bf and I took a little road trip to Long Beach, WA.

This week I did all my training for my new floating concierge position. I worked Friday morning then met the bf at my place and we headed to Washington.

Complete with doggie and all!! He wasn’t too happy about the traffic hahahahaha

We got a little dog friendly motel room right on the beach. Went for a little run Saturday morning

After our little run we headed into town for lunch and some exploring

Super stoked to see this hahahahaha

And got the biggest ice cream cone ever!!

Even sharing it with the bf I couldn’t finish it!

It was a fun quick trip, I had to be back by mid-day Sunday so I could train that night.

This morning I had an amazing breakfast

12 grain toast with a 2 egg omelet that had onions and Parmesan cheese and an orange. Mmmm I’m hungry just thinking about it.

Then I rode the trimet/max around town getting down the routes from my place to the places I would concierge at. Parking downtown is horribly priced.

It was an interesting day lol.

And tonight I hit the gym to do 3 miles while watching The Bachelor

And a little Veronica Mars before bed

Hello from not so sunny California

Hi!!!! Wednesday morning I flew to my hometown of Long Beach, CA for my grandmas 90th birthday party!!!

After an errand with my mom we hit In ‘n’ Out

Yep, my priorities are in check hahahaha!!

Got a new shirt from Costco

Met my friend for a little workout

After 2 miles someone tells me you arent allowed to run only walk……say what??!!! So i walked 2 more miles with my friend while we chatted….but I don’t need to come here again.

Went out for dinner and dancing…..on a Thursday night hahahaha.

Friday we did some preparations for the big birthday party

Then today, Saturday, was the party.

We when got to the venue to set up there was a little water being pumped out from this crazy storm SoCal had

We took some fun photos

My sister and I

My awesome brothers

First time all 4 siblings have been together in almost 9 years.

Siblings and mom

Birthday girl in the middle, 90 years young!!!!

I love my family soo much!!!

After party at my aunt’s house

And now I’m ready for sleep.

Goodnight

Weekend Wrap-up

Let’s see Thursday i had class the hit the gym to train with my friend. After strength training we hit the treadmills, i watched Grey’s Anatomy and ran

I did intervals

Friday the boyfriend came over, we took Artemis to the dog park the ran some errands.

We went out to dinner and got Thai food. I got pineapple fried rice and he got pad thai……..they put curry in my pineapple fried rice!!!!! That was so not listed in the ingredients and I am not a big fan of curry, thankfully the boyfriend is and he very gallantly traded dinner with me.  Afterwards we hit the bar for a pre-movie cocktail, this was probably my second drink of the year hahahahaha, I don’t drink much. Then we headed to the movie and saw Fifty Shades Darker. I enjoyed it.

Saturday I made us chips and dip, a delicious but simple dip my mom always made. Cream cheese on the bottom then mild diced green chilis add chili on top of that and cheese on top of that and bake in the oven at 375-400 until the sides bubble.

Then we went mini-golfing

He completely decimated me.

Saturday night we made homemade pizzas

I am also babysitting my roommates dog this weekend, he says hi

Today was relaxing. We met my friend at the park and went for a run

I am quite happy, my goal for the week was 9 miles and my weekly total was 10.6!!

That brings my yearly total to 41.6.

My goal for next week is 12 miles.

And now it’s study time!!! My midterm is on Tuesday, wish me luck!!!!!

How was your weekend?

Insomnia sucks

No I don’t suffer from insomnia on a regular basis, thank goodness!!!

It only happens like once ever few months, adulting catches up and my brain won’t shut off. I have mad respect for people who function on little sleep. I LOVE my sleep and usually get 7-9 hours.

Yowza it is pouring outside right now.

Here is a little recap of the last few days

I went on a mini and i emphasize the word mini cleaning spree.

Made some yummy food.

Semi- homemade pizza. Here is my little tip: put your toppings on first then out your cheese on so you out less on

I love pineapple juice

These are yummy.

And I got in a short run after my strength training on Tuesday night

Mix in a lot of studying and that is the majority of my week.

What is your favorite meal?

I have too many to list

Runner safety tip #1

Right now it is cold, gray, and raining outside and the fore see able forecast is more rain. That being said it is rain and not snow, it may not feel like it but sping is just a month and a half away which means whether you are running outside right now or not more and more of us will be hitting the streets soon instead of our trusty treadmills.

One really important thing is to keep your running routine varied. It is so easy to find a time and place that fit perfectly into your daily or weekly routine and stick with it. Don’t. Varry when you run and where you run.

Not having variation in your routine makes you and your home vulnerable.

You are vulnerable to stalkers (especially with so much of our lives on social media), kidnappers and sexual assults.

Your home is more vulnerable to being broken into if someone knows you always go out for a run on a certain day and time and are gone a certain amount of time.

I know it’s a pain but try and change it up now and then.

More runner safety tips coming soon!!!!
