Money and Food

In case I haven’t mentioned it (ya right?) I am a BROKE college student with lots of debt, and in case it hasn’t been made clear I LOVE food.

Because I am broke and in debt I have been making a budget for myself the last year-ish, I have all my bills typed up each month on an excel sheet that is always in plain view and I cross my bills off as I pay them so I don’t forget any. Doing this means I usually budget myself for all my bills, I try and remember gas and food.

Yet somehow even though I do this I seem to always be pinching even smaller pennies than usual by the week of payday and half the time I end of overdrawing on either my checking account or a credit card resulting in fees and overnight bill pay charges eating into my already small funds. I have slowly been getting rid of unnecessary luxuries and paring things down, I do a lot less amazon shopping and am trying to do this 3-day rule thing, if you still want it in 3 days then you can buy it if I can justify it to myself, it has helped a lot. But again somehow I always come up short.

So after I set up my new bill worksheet (I had reached the end of the old one) I decided to look at where my last paycheck went……………………………it went to a school payment and bills and a few cosmetic things, one or two small fun things but it still seemed like I blew through it way to fast…….where did a big chunk go……FOOD!

I try very hard to plan out my meals so that I can save money and not waste food but I have clearly not adjusted too well to my new schedule.

Problem # 1 I have this “you are broke don’t spend more than you absolutely have to at the grocery store”. So I go in and buy as little as possible; which is great I walk out of grocery outlet with a $25-$30 grocery bill I have even allowed 1-2 impulse buys…….but because I went in with that mentality instead of a carefully planned out menu taking all meals and snacks into account, I didn’t get everything I need so I go back to the store later in the week to pick up a few things and walk out $20 later……then I go back a few days later for a few more things and walk out $15 later and my $25-30 grocery bill went up to $60-70 bucks for 10-15 days of eating……say what?!

Problem # 2 My schedule. Saturday and Sunday are great I eat breakfast in the AM, head to work, have a packed lunch and 1-2 snacks then when I get home I have dinner. The week is where it gets messy. Since I haven’t yet figured out how to plan for every meal and snack here is how my week goes:

Monday/Wednesday- have a smoothie for breakfast, go to class, come home and have eggs on toast for a 2nd breakfast/early lunch, pack dinner and work things and then go to 2nd class, go from 2nd class to work but haven’t packed a snack/meal to eat while driving from school to train station to rush to work so I stop and a fast food place….there goes $3-5 (each day). Go to work eat my snacks throughout my shift and eat dinner between 7:30-8:30pm, I get off work at 11:05 and catch the last train back to my car and am set to get home just before midnight….but it has now been 4.5-5.5 hours since I have eaten dinner and I am hungry again. And again instead of having packed a snack I can eat while driving (and I don’t want to make one at home at 12:15 at night, my roommates are asleep in our tiny place) I drive through fast food again, there is another $3-7.

Tuesday is a little better-  I have a smoothie and eggs on toast for breakfast after a run then do some house chores. I have a simple lunch like today was top ramen, sometimes it is grilled cheese or pasta, whatever. Then I pack dinner and work things and head to work around 1:35pm. Go to work eat my snacks throughout my shift and eat dinner between 7:30-8:30pm, and again I get off work at 11:05 and catch the last train back to my car and am set to get home just before midnight….but it’s been 4.5-5.5 hours again since I have eaten dinner and I’m hungry. And again instead of having packed a snack I can eat while driving (and I don’t want to make one at home) I drive through fast food again, there is another $3-7.

Now I don’t actually get food every night, I would say 1 out of 3 nights I work but still. It adds up in the wallet and waste line.

I have potentially added anywhere from an extra $3-25 to my grocery bill in a week. And a few thousand calories to my week because its all fast food.

Figuring this out was eye opening. I know I have been rambling so if you are still with me here is my plan. Come payday I am going to withdraw $20 and put it in my wallet, that is my last minute food money that has to last me until the next paycheck, I can guilt free grab Starbucks or order a pizza or go to a restaurant, but once its gone, its gone. I am also going to better plan my meals and spend the extra $10 at the first trip to the grocery store so I don’t spend and extra $30 later. And I am only letting myself have that one trip, I cannot set foot back in the grocery store until the next weeks meal planning has been done and I am buying groceries for the next week. This should potentially save me about $50/paycheck which is HUGE for me.

Does anybody else ever wonder where their money goes?

Update since I wrote this about a week ago: I have started packing PB&J sandwiches for in between school and work and either another sandwich or a mini bag of chips or something for on my way home form work Mon-Wed and I am already doing so much better!!!! Also I have challenged myself to 30 days of no fast food (I don’t count good pizza as fast food, things like dominos, pizza hut and little Caesar’s totally count but not the good stuff). hahahaha.

Happy Monday!!!!

(Image from google)

Workout goal this week 4 workouts. I have hit 3 workouts 2 weeks in a row so hopefully I can hit 4 this week.

It is hard to believe but there are only 4 weeks left in this quarter. It is FLYING by. I need to step my studying back up, I have slacked the last 2 weeks.

Saturday night I decided I was going to get Taco Bell and really enjoy it then put myself of a 30 day fast food ban. I have already cut back the last week but I need to cut it out or at least severely reduce it, I am hoping cutting it out for 30 days will help me do this. On Saturdays I will start posting my meals for the week to keep me honest.

Call me out if you see something that looks like fast food!!!!

Hope you all have a GREAT week!!!!! I am super excited for the BF and I’s outing on Friday, can’t wait to tell you all about it!!!

Tidbits from the week

Week 6! Just 4 weeks left! That is terrifying but awesome, these quarters go by so quickly!!!!

Last week I took my Chem midterm and got a B woohoo. I took my Bio midterm on Monday and got an A.

I worked on Sunday then the BF came over for dinner, it was the healthiest mostly premade dinner you can probably do lol. We had brown rice, rotisserie chicken (those premade, precooked ones you can buy at the store) and corn on the cob.

Monday in between classes Artemis and I went on a little 1.5 miles hike, see all those stopping points on the walk, she found some really good smells hahahahaha!

I took some of that leftover chicken and made an awesome salad! I may have to do this more often. Then off to work I went.

What I am listening to this week:

Tuesday I got out and did a total of 3.2 miles running. It was 1.2 miles on the treadmill then 2 miles outside.

Wednesday I relaxed in between classes.

Thursday I got another 3 miles in.

I bf and I were supposed to hike on Friday but during Chem lab I started not feeling so well so we just stayed in an relaxed. We watched some Bear Grylls and got pizza and fell asleep at 6pm hahahaha. Apparently we both needed sleep. It was a good relaxing day but I am bummed about missing hiking.

3 workouts completed this week!

Tidbits from the week

Week 5 of the quarter done, officially half way through!!! If you don’t count finals week, which I don’t because the insane studying comes before that.

I spend about 3.33 hours a week on the train now, wow when I add it up it seems like so much, along with about another 1.67 hours walking to and from the train. Makes sense why I am blowing through a book on tape every other week hahaha. It also means I spend 3.33 hours a week trying not to fall asleep on the train and miss my stop and sometimes trying very hard to ignore the crazy people around so they don’t try and talk to me.

This was a drinking week for me hahaha I had pizza with Brandon one night and I got those little bottles of Sutter’s home wine it was a nice cheap buzz and another night I opened a bottle of wine that Brandon, that is the BF’s name lol, and I bought on our first roadtrip down to Medford, OR.

The train was running late one day so I walked to the next bus stop to get in some extra steps, it was sunny so I soaked up some vitamin D. Got to walk over a cool bridge.

Got in 2.3 miles of running on Tuesday morning.

She just looked so cute I had to take a picture, don’t judge the clothes on the floor, the next day was laundry day.

I wrote out my May calendar……yikes, that always looks so intimidating at the beginning of the month.

Made slightly healthier top ramen, broke college student over here!!!!!!!!!!!

My Bio lab teacher was looking through this coloring WORKBOOk (I have only looked at coloring books) to see if she liked it and it looked amazing! I totally want it but of course its $75 on amazon.

Wednesday was another beautiful day so Artemis and I soaked up some sunshine by going on a little 2 mile walk down by the river in between my classes.

I actually had Friday off from everything!!! NO work and no school so the BF and I jumped in his car and hit the road for a mini road trip and a hike. We went just outside of Bend to Smith Rock park and did just under 4 miles, we would have stayed out a little longer but some serious wind and clouds started rolling in so we got some dinner and headed home. We hit a little snow over the pass coming back toward Portland and didn’t get home until just after 9pm so it is good we left when we did. A few parts were steep and difficult but overall it was super fun!

And with that I actually accomplished my 3 workouts this week goal!!! Woohoo!!!

StitchFix business edition

Hi!!!! You all know I love stitchfix, if you want to try it follow this link:

https://www.stitchfix.com/referral/7169629?sod=w&som=c

There is no commitment, you can cancel or pause anytime you want.

As I have said I am working full time now and the job I got requires me to dress business professional. I had one jacket/blazer (from stitchfix actually hahaha) and one pair of dress pants. I had a few shirts I could rotate around but that is it. My roommate lent me a pair of pants and two blazers indefinitely but even that addition to my wardrobe meant that by the end of the week my clothes were starting to stink a bit. Especially when you factor in that my jacket gets folded up in my bag on top of my lunch either for the ride to and from my car on the train or that plus the 1.5 hours I am in class, that didn’t help the smell.

With all that said, I went to stitchfix, I hadn’t gotten a fix since last august since I have been broke, but I said I wanted a fix, let a note for my stylist that I needed work clothes and this is what I got:

White lace detail top and black (stretch and comfy!) dress pants

Green sort of pleated top, love the deep green color

Super comfy, again slightly stretchy, navy blazer

And this skirt. Again super stretchy and comfortable.
I love it all and am keeping it all!!!! Shout out to my aunt for sending me a little money for my bday which helped me pay for it!!!!

Happy May day!!!!!!!

I hope the weather is nice so you can get out and enjoy it!!!

Workout goal this week-3 workouts in any form.

I got 2 workouts in last week, 1 walk/run and 1 hike. The weather wasn’t too bad and I should have gone out on Saturday after work for a little run but I was lazy instead hahaha I am working on it! The weather looks promising for this week so fingers crossed!!!!!
A few pics from the hike

She is so in her element when she is off least in the forest with no one else around

What are your goals this week?

Tidbits from the week

And with that we are almost 1/2 through the quarter and are about to say goodbye to April!

School this week was ok. I skipped chem class on Monday, I was in a bad head space and needed to chill.

I relaxed with the puppy and watched some TV.

I am not feeling as dedicated this quarter though, probably because I am working full time as well which is a big adjustment.

I discovered this which tastes way too good and is probably going to kill me. I am slowly getting used to my new schedule, but by Wednesday night I am so wiped out.

Tuesday I got a little food prep done, mini frittatas

Which make 2nd breakfast/early lunch a breeze

Pretty delicious and ready in less than 5 minutes!

I also broke down and spent $35 on a magic bullet, protien smoothies are a great start to the day!!!

Then I had some pizza and salad, balance right?? Hahahahaha

I also went for a little walk outside with the roommate then jumped on the treadmill.

I need to start yoga again. My lower back is killing me and I think its pinching a nerve in my leg.

What I am currently listening to:

It is SUPER interesting, at least I think it is.

Friday it was pretty nice weather so after lab the BF and I did a little 4 mile hike! And before we left he made pot roast, threw it in a cast iron pot and let it cook on low until dinner time…….so good!!!!!!

Where did April go????!!!!! Are we seriously in the last week of April already? And I am in week 4 of school, only 1.5 more months in this quarter. I have gotten a good routine down but I will admit it includes coffee or an energery drink prettt much every day hahaha! But I limit it to one French press’ worth (generally) which is only about 1 1/4 cup. I don’t think that is too bad.

I am also pretty adjusted to working while going to school again, it is just very fatiguing. I am slowly finding the energy to do it all.

I got in 2 ‘workouts’ last week. A short run Tuesday morning and an hour+ walk with the BF and the dog on Friday.

My goal this week is 3 workouts.

I cannot wait for this quarter to be over so I can actually have 1 whole day off.

Enjoy the last full week of April 2017! Make it count because you will never get it back!

Tidbits from the week

Week 3 of spring semester has come and gone. Today is Earth day!!! Get out there and celebrate! If your weather isn’t horrible get out there and walk, run, hike, bike or whatever! Maybe enjoy a picnic outside with someone special? I am at a desk now but I got out in the sun yesterday, today rain is forecast all day.

This week was exhausting, I am not really sure why it was so tiring nothing that different happened.

I had work on Sunday, ran home to see the pup and let her out then I left to go see the BF, Artemis was not too happy with me but we will have all Tuesday morning together. The BF and I made veggie fettuccini that was delicious, it probably would have been even better if I didn’t rush it but I was hungry. We also watched a few episodes of Code Black which is my new obsession.

Image from google

Monday I felt like I was rushing all day. I didn’t get as much sleep as I would like, Artemis had to go out at 6am (probably pay back for leaving her alone all day Sunday). Got out the door 3 minutes late to my first class and barley stayed focused during it. Ran errands on my break between classes and grabbed lunch because i didn’t want to worry about the time it would take to make something

But managed to be quick about everything and was able to sit down and home and eat lunch with Artemis and spend about 30 minutes with her,

then packed for work, rushed off to Chem class (I think I fell asleep with my eyes open) then rushed to catch the train and tried not to fall asleep on the train.

I got puppy cuddles on Tuesday morning, she cuddles a lot more when I am gone more than I am home.

We also went out for a little walk/run Tuesday morning.

Wednesday was another day of running around and feeling busy. By Wednesday night I am just wiped out.

Thursday I had dinner and drinks with a friend, girl time is a must!

Friday it was so beautiful out! I got lots of chores done then Artemis, the BF and I went for a walk around the river then relaxed the rest of the night.

And now it is Saturday morning, I am back at work, going to try and get some HW done and grab an energy drink on my break because I did not sleep well last night.

Hope you all had an awesome week!!

What is the most tiring day of your week?

Monday Motivation**April 17, 2017

Good Morning!!!!

(Image from google)

Today is going to be a busy day, I am heading out the door to bio, then back home to let the dog out and get ready for work, then back to chemistry class, then rush to the train to work. Then I will be rushing to catch the last train back out at 11:16pm to get home and head to sleep.

My goal this week is 3 workouts. I managed 2 last week.

Week 3 of school and working full time. I still got this! But I will admit I am so tired come Tuesday/Wednesday that my “weekend” aka the two days I don’t work and only have labs in the morning are spent just resting. I need to figure something out because I feel like I am constantly dragging, and am drinking way too many energy drinks. Maybe I will start napping Thursday afternoons before the BF gets here so I am a little more rested so that we can get out and do things instead of just watch TV/movies because I am so tired. I will keep you posted.

What are your goals for the week?
