Time to start upping our water intake.

Hi everyone!!!!!

Oh my goodness, mom and I start the trail in 3 weeks!!!!!

With that being said it is time to start upping our water intake.

On dry spots on the trail when you get to a water source you’ camel up’. This means that you clean your water then drink as much as possible then clean more to take with you.

Doing this means you stay hydrated longer, you don’t have to dip into your water stash until later in your day.

With that little background now stated we can talk about why mom and I need to start drinking more water before we even start the trail.

Most people are never fully hydrated, we get some water fro, the coffee we drink and soda etc. But still most of us don’t get the full amount of water our bodies need to function at their optimal level.

Something that will help us in the desert is to be fully hydrated when we start.

Today is March 16. This week’s goal will be to drink 1 liter of water every day…..that is not including any coffee or other beverages, just pure water.

image

My camelbak is one liter. That is 32oz or 4 full glasses of water.

For the 2 weeks before the trail the goal will be double that,  so 2 litters of water a day. That will get us to full hydration. …….at least according to science lol.

Care to do it with us? I promise all it can do is help you 🙂

Gofundme

Hi Everyone!

So since money unfortunately has been an issue for me, my Aunt just sent me a text about a website called Gofundme.

I googled it and set up an account. If you are interested in donating to my PCT hike here is the link:

Anything and everything is appreciated. I don’t enjoy asking for money, it is very humbling, but I won’t let my pride stand in the way of experiencing the best hike possible.

Thank you!

Mt. Rose

Hi Everyone!!!

Today mom and i strapped on our backpacks to get out and do a test hike.

CAM00406

There was a lot more snow than we thought but it was still so much fun.

I got to load my pack up with all (well most of) my gear.

CAM00414

Mom said she had fun and i think this made her feel better about doing her part of the trail.

There was so much snow we stopped being able to follow the trail about half way up so we just walked around in the snow for awhile.

Ok for some reason my other video won’t be “found” from Youtube so here is the link

Arg i can’t wait for my next paycheck so i can just buy videopress and directly load videos from my phone…..

Anyways, after our fun test hike we got some delicious lunch!!

CAM00416

Then we hit Win-co Foods to get some bulk bin candy and food.

And ended the day with a quick stop at REI to pick up a keychain temperature gauge.

Mom’s first video….and a bit more

Hi Everyone!

I subjected mom to her first video, i figured she better get used to it.

What do you guys think?

I am finally starting to feel better, KNOCK ON WOOD!!! I went out for a short walk today and saw some wild horses. I am happy i got out and walked, i did 2.4 miles, not much but it is a start. I think tomorrow i should be able to get back out and do some more. Thankfully it is supposed to keep getting warmer everyday through the weekend all the way up to the 60s.

Oh and no, i don’t live in the mansion on the hill…i wish lol

Getting busier and busier

Hi everyone!!!! Things are good here, still fighting this cold, sinusitis, whatever it is.  I’m sick of being sick.
We are down to Just over 20 days until I leave for southern California. It’s coming fast!
So my first paycheck was just for the week I worked in January but I was able to cross some important things off my list.

image

My Sun hat and mosquito head net. It’s Ok, you can admit that it’s sexy hahahaha.

image

A small field repair kit to fix anything that breaks/rips on my tent, sleeping bag, backpack etc.

image

Biodegradable all-purpose cleaner.

image

Toe socks! Injinji toe socks, they are supposed to seriously cut down on the blisters. Everything is laying out to dry after I washed it.

image

Exofficio underwear. They are wicking, quick drying etc.

image

Lots and lots of ibuprofen. Otherwise referred to as vitamin I. Its a joke because you end up taking so much on the trail.

image

Cold weather beanie. Got it on sale!

image

My first buff. A buff is like a bandana but it’s stretchy, moisture wicking, quick dry, etc. I got it on clearance for $7!!! They only had one kind so mom and I ended up with matching buffs lol. I still need to buy a second one.

image

Poison ivy wash. I think this is self explanatory lol. No poison ivy or poodle dog Bush is going to stop me!

And finally I leave you with a picture of the insanity that is my planning and prepping.

Food, the never ending project

Hi everyone!!!!! I hope everyone is doing well. Sadly my antibiotics ended and within 4 days I was feeling sick again. I’ll have to call my doctor and get a stronger, longer dose. I also think this is the universe telling me to start tapering off my subbing until the trail. I think I’ll limit myself to 3 days a week now and 2 weeks before we leave I’ll take it down to 2 days a week. This way I’m still earning some money but am giving myself lots of rest and prep time.
Anyways my dehydrator is going pretty much every day. I’m starring to pack my food up in 1 day quantities.

image

This way I don’t have to search for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks everyday.
I already have mom and I’s 9 days of food all packed up.
So this is what we will have in our packs when we start the trail.

image

Amazon and Costco are my food buying friends. I am ordering from Amazon at least once a week lol

image

image

I’ve also started buying VIA coffee and refreshers for the trail.
The VIA coffee I am putting in little baggies with sugar and non-fat milk powder so all I have to do is add hot water.

image

We tried the VIA today and wow did mom not like it lol. I think she was expecting home brewed coffee or her frappachino instead of instant coffee and dry milk powder hahahahaha. Reality check mom, when you need a caffeine boost just chug it, its not gonna taste amazing. The sacrifices we make on the trail.

Quick update

Hi Everyone!

So today i am mainly sitting on the couch, playing on the computer with the TV on in the background.

I am rereading old posts by my favorite (so far lol) PCT thru hiker.

https://mexicotocanada2013.wordpress.com

I think i may have mentioned her before. I am also reading her other site, serial nomad. I am also playing candy crush saga and drinking Starbucks. There is of course food going in the dehydrator. I shot a quick video to update you. Please excuse the 2 day slept in braids, the pajamas, the looking like crap lol. When i am sick i pretty much just don’t give a crap. I think it is time to try out that old wives tale where you cut open an onion and sleep with it by your bed. I will try just about anything at this point. Hope you enjoy me looking my worst!!!

I am such a girl

Hi!!!!

How is everyone? I am good, holy crap we are down to about 1 month!!!!

In honesty i have been a bit of a vain girly girl my whole life. I’ve done dance, cheerleading and gymnastics. I have no problem leaving the house without makeup on and it doesn’t take me hours to get ready but i enjoy being a woman. That being said i have been trying to figure out how to remain somewhat feminine out of the trail.

I will be dirty, sweaty and smelly; my hair will probably be up 80-90% of the time and ill be in clothes that will be progressively getting looser and looser…..and grosser and grosser. I won’t have any makeup on for close to 6 straight months and will be wearing the same outfit almost everyday.

Knowing all of this, i have decided to make an effort in small, but still practical ways. I bought cute hoop earrings to wear on the trail, it is amazing what simple earrings will do.

CAM00310

Hoops are a little more sanitary than studs when being left in for long periods of time since they allow more breathability.

And i bought a workout skirt, technically its a skort. It has spandex shorts underneath. It is comfortable and it is wicking material. So i can be comfortable, practical and still cute.

CAM00300

I know i am a dork, but being able to be a little girly out there is something that is important to me and i think will help me deal with the constant dirt and grime.

What do you think about me trying to maintain some femininity?

Medical kit

I’ve got the majority of my medical stuff bought.

image

With about 43 days until I set foot on the trail I am starting to assemble things how I will have them on the trail so I can start learning how to pack and fit everything in. I packed and repackaged my backpack every few days before Costa Rica and Peru before I figured how to fit everything in.

Obviously I have things for blister prevention and care, bandaids, gauze, alcohol pads, ace bandages and so on. Then I’ve got all my sickness relievers like benadryl, nausea tablets, dramamine etc. I’ve put them in individual Ziploc bags becasue packages take up unnecessary space .

image

I have labeled each bag with the name and dosage. I learned a very valuable lesson in Costa Rica about not labeling your medications. I’ll spare you the gory details but will say what I wanted was a laxative and what I took was an anti-diarrheal, needless to say I had a bad week lol.

image

Ibuprofen will have the biggest bag of all. On the trail ibuprofen is called Vitamin I becasue you end up taking it so regularly. I am also stocking up on chapstick becasue I am already a chapstick-a-holic and figure I’ll want it frequently on the trail…..and I’m sure 1 or 2 will get lost or forgotten along the way.
Ahhhh we are getting closer!!! Its going to be here before I know it!!!
